Beijing hosted the 11th Asian Games in September-October 1990. This was the first time that the People's Republic of China hosted the Asian Games.
More than 4,680 athletes from almost 40 countries and regions in Asia participated in the Games. They competed in 27 sports for a total of 310 gold medals.
The Games' mascot was a great panda called "Panpan."
Beijing built the State Olympic Sports Center and the Asian Games Village especially for the Asian Games. The State Olympic Sports Center includes a main stadium and many other venues.
Beijing also built a large number of roads, flyovers and other infrastructures projects in preparation for the Asian Games.
