Dragon boat racing, which will enter the Asian Games as a new sport in Guangzhou next year, has been enjoying great popularity in South China for more than 2,000 years.

As an annual event, the tournament this year was regarded as part of the preparations for Dragon Boat in the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, both by the organiser and by the participants. With "New Games, New Life" as its theme, the tournament was held on the Pearl River between the Guangzhou Bridge and Haiyin Bridge. Among the 107 teams, 81 were from Guangzhou and neighbouring city Foshan and 26 from abroad. Asian Games themed slogans, such as "Come on, Guangzhou!", "Organising great Asian Games Dragon Boat races!" and "Guangdong welcomes the Asian Games Flame!", could be found among spectators along the river banks and on Ersha Island.

It was the first time for the Guangzhou Bridge – Haiyin Bridge section of the Pearl River to witness the event, which had taken place between the Jiefang Bridge and Renmin Bridge previously for over ten consecutive years.
