Panyu's waste disposal scheme has been finalised. Compared with the version submitted for public consultation a month ago, the final scheme incorporates three suggestions provided by the public: first, trial waste segregation and pollutant discharge points will also be built in established residential communities in the city core, rural areas and parks; second, the marketing of clean vegetables will be encouraged to reduce the generation of domestic waste; and third, existing waste disposal sites will be renovated and upgraded as pilot programmes and makeshift waste incineration facilities will be shut down as planned before the Asian Games.

During the month-long public consultation, Panyu authorities received 1,216 pieces suggestions and comments for waste disposal in Panyu from residents at more than ten residential estates. On the basis of the public input, district authorities amended the draft versions of the schemes for building a waste disposal site and for waste segregation and collection in Panyu, and worked out two final schemes.

According to the final schemes, site selection for the waste disposal project, which has previously been much debated among local residents, starts in January. A number of candidate sites will be jointly selected by the government, experts and citizens and subjected to feasibility studies and discussions before the final decision is made.

Panyu has formed a Waste Disposal Project Leadership Group Office headed by the district magistrate. The office is in charge of all work related to the waste disposal project. Local citizens may dial 84636310 to submit their suggestions.
