Women's Boxing enters 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games

Guangzhou, January 20 - The 16th Asian Games, part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is pleased to announce that Women’s Boxing will appear in the Guangzhou Asian Games this November prior making its debut at the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London in 2012.

The Asian Games are the second largest sports event in the world after the Summer Olympic Games.

According to Li Xiaofeng, Executive Deputy Director of the Sports Department of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC), more women's events will debut than men's during the 16th Asian Games including Women's Kabaddi, Water Polo, Cricket, Roller Sports, Dragon Boat, Weiqi, Xiangqi and Boxing.

Among them, the greatest attention is being focused on Women's Boxing, which will be unveiled at the 2010 London Summer Olympics, following a decision made at the International Olympic Committee Executive Board Meeting in Berlin in August 2009.

The Asian Boxing Confederation proposed the inclusion of Women's Boxing in the 2010 Asian Games to the Olympic Council of Asia and GAGOC in hopes of raising the level of Women's Boxing in Asia.

In early January 2010, the OCA and GAGOC decided to add three events of Women's Boxing into the 16th Asian Games, which will feature a total of 476 events under 42 sports.
