The Guangzhou-Foshan Metro Line, an iconic project of the integration of the two cities, is currently under construction and is expected to open its first section between Kuiqi Road and Xilang to the public ahead of the Asian Games. Construction began on October 11, 2002 on the trial section of the line. At present, the civil construction of the line is 96% complete.

Guangzhou and Foshan share an approximately 200-kilometre long border, with Guangzhou's Huadu, Baiyun, Liwan, Panyu and Nansha adjoining with Foshan's Sanshui, Nanhai and Shunde.

In the long run, the Guangzhou-Foshan Metro Line will be connected to four national railways, five intercity rail links, and seven intra-city rail links. In the short run, it will be linked to the Guangzhou-Foshan Metro Line 2, the Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing Line, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, and the Shugang Railway at Nansha.
